Energy Planning Program

SCAG's decision makers can pursue regional energy programs that will enable the region to support state and federal energy goals while growing in accordance with SCAG's adopted plans, such as the Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy, Compass Growth Vision, and Regional Comprehensive Plan.

Projects

On April 4, 2012, SCAG unanimously adopted the 2012 - 2035 Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy (RTP/SCS) and certified the Program Environmental Impact Report. The 25 year plan is an investment plan for the region's economic viability by providing transportation and housing options to meet professional and life style choices while supporting the business community's need to compete nationally and internationally. As part of the RTP/SCS, SCAG included supportive strategies to accelerate fleet conversion to near-zero and zero-emission transportation technologies. A significant expansion of infrastructure is needed throughout the region to accommodate the anticipated increase in alternative fueled vehicles. SCAG's policy with regard to alternative fuels is technology neutral and does not favor any one technology over any other. SCAG's alternative fuel goals are to promote emissions reduction and improved mobility in ways that are effective and cost-effective. In 2010, the Regional Council directed SCAG staff to assume the lead administrative role of the Southern California Clean Cities Program. The SCAG (or Southern California) Clean Cities Coalition coordinates the activities of both private and public sector proponents of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) by providing a forum to discover commonalties, collaborate on public policy, investigate opportunities for joint projects, leverage scarce resources and cooperate on promoting the benefits of AFVs throughout the region

SCAG is currently engaged in a collaborative process to prepare Southern California for the forecasted influx of Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PEV), which will reduce air pollution, address AB 32 and SB 375, and attract green businesses to Southern California. More information will be posted soon.

SCAG updated its Regional Comprehensive Plan (RCP) in 2008. The energy chapter addresses issues including energy demand and supply, energy infrastructure, conservation and renewable energy opportunities.
