A record-breaking 700 elected officials, business and community leaders, and transportation, land use and environmental planning experts gathered May 5 and 6 for SCAG's 45th annual Regional Conference and General Assembly.
For the second consecutive year, the event was held at the beautiful La Quinta Resort and Club in Coachella Valley. Day One featured the SCAG/USC/Los Angeles Times Partnership: “Fixing California” series, moderated by Dan Schnur of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics. Panel topics included Jobs and the Economy, Housing and Transportation, and a question-and-answer session with the senior policy advisors to two gubernatorial primary campaigns. Day Two included informative panel discussions on key 2010 ballot initiatives and their potential impact on Southern California, as well a presentation and major stakeholder discussion on greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Highlights of the event included the annual Compass Blueprint Awards Dinner, a video presentation of SCAG's 2010 accomplishments, recognition of El Centro Councilman Jon Edney's service as president in 2009-10, and the induction of SCAG's new president, Highland City Councilman Larry McCallon.
